WYNG Philomathia Machine Learning/AI Competition 2018-19

WYNG Philomathia Machine Learning/AI Competition 2018-19」

Winning a trip to the University of Cambridge in England

in WYNG Philomathia Machine Learning/AI Competition 2018-19

Congratulations! A team of Ho Yu students has honorably won WYNG Philomathia Machine Learning/AI Competition 2018-19 and is entitled to a weeklong all-expenses paid trip to England together with the other two winning teams from St. Paul's Convent School and St. Stephen's College respectively. Members of this team, ‘Eddie, Jason and Ben’, include three S.5 students, namely Hui Lap Pong, Wong Shing To and Yip Sin Kuen. Their coach teacher, Mr. Cheung King Hang, is also granted this chance to join the trip to England with these winning students. They will experience college life at the University of Cambridge, as well as visit London from 2nd to 9th July, 2019.

The competition aims at empowering individuals through education and engagement, and encouraging machine and AI initiatives in local upper secondary students. The contestants were asked to identify quality variations of individual strawberries in terms of size, ripeness, or damage. They needed to use their science and engineering knowledge to design a system to automatically discriminate high quality strawberries from others.

‘Eddie, Jason and Ben’ spent four months on data collection and data analysis. They also put much effort into producing an English-narrated demonstration video clip before they were selected to enter the final in which they presented a prototype they created in a judging interview. Though there were difficult times throughout the preparation for the competition, with perseverance and hard work, this team was able to overcome the difficulties and become one of the winning teams.

Sincerely hope that ‘Eddie, Jason and Ben’ and Mr. Cheung will enjoy a fruitful trip by experiencing overseas learning in a world-class campus environment.
